Description

Part of the series The Landscape of Lament, this photograph was made at Mizen Head, County Cork, and looks through a narrow gap in the cliffs towards Three Castle Head, with the sea breaking at the foot of the rock.

The Landscape of Lament won Feature Shoot's Emerging Photographer of the Year award in 2020 and was exhibited at the Aperture Gallery in New York.

After my father died on 21 October 2017, I began this series to record the process of grief and to preserve the feelings and emotions that arose. The images were made during the first year after his passing on a large format camera, with a single exposure at each location. The process was both arduous and cathartic. I wanted to bring grief up close, almost like at the wake, and to expose both the landscape I found myself in and the thoughts, feelings and emotions that rose within it.

In Irish tradition, Keeners sang a lament over the body as it was taken from the house. This collection of images is my Keen to my father.

Printed to archival fine art standards, this piece brings a quiet, atmospheric stillness and depth to any space.
